Getting Started with Midjourney
Midjourney operates differently from most web-based AI tools. It runs entirely within Discord, a popular chat application. To get started, you must first create a free Discord account and then join the official Midjourney Discord server. Once inside, you interact with the Midjourney Bot by typing commands into chat channels.
The fundamental command you will use is /imagine. When you type this, a prompt box appears where you describe the image you want to create. The bot will process your request and generate a grid of four low-resolution images within about a minute.
Below this grid, you will see two rows of buttons: U1-U4 and V1-V4. The "U" buttons stand for Upscale—clicking one will isolate that specific image from the grid and render a larger, more detailed version. The "V" buttons stand for Variation—clicking one will generate a new grid of four images based on the style and composition of the selected image. Understanding this basic workflow is the first step to creating incredible AI art.
AI Art Trends and Inspiration
The landscape of AI art evolves rapidly as models update and the community discovers new prompting techniques. Currently, there is a massive shift toward hyper-realism and cinematic photography. Prompt engineers are moving away from generic terms like "beautiful painting" and instead using specific camera terminology like "shot on 35mm lens," "Kodak Portra 400," or "f/1.8 aperture" to achieve lifelike depth of field and film grain.
Another major trend is the blending of contrasting artistic movements. For example, combining "Cyberpunk" with "Art Nouveau" or "Synthwave" with "Baroque architecture." This juxtaposition forces the AI to create entirely novel aesthetics that human artists rarely explore.
To find inspiration, study traditional art history and photography. The AI knows the styles of thousands of famous artists, directors, and photographers. Referencing specific creators (e.g., "in the style of Wes Anderson" or "lighting by Roger Deakins") provides the AI with a massive dataset of visual rules to follow, instantly elevating the quality of your output.
Prompt Engineering Best Practices
Prompt engineering is the practice of designing inputs that yield optimal outputs from AI models. Whether you are generating text with ChatGPT or images with Midjourney, the core methodology remains the same: clarity, context, and constraints.
1. Establish Context and Role: Always tell the AI who it is and what the goal is. "Act as a senior marketing executive writing a campaign brief" yields vastly different results than simply asking "Write a campaign brief."
2. Be Explicit with Formatting: If you want a table, ask for a table. If you want bullet points, specify it. You can even dictate the tone: "Use a professional but approachable tone, avoiding corporate jargon."
3. Use the Few-Shot Technique: AI learns best by example. Instead of just giving instructions (Zero-Shot), provide one or two examples of the desired output within your prompt. This drastically reduces hallucinations and formatting errors.
4. Iterate: The first prompt is rarely the final prompt. Analyze the AI's output, identify where it deviated from your vision, and adjust your instructions accordingly.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
The most common mistake beginners make is being too vague. Asking an AI to "write a good article about space" forces the model to guess your target audience, desired length, tone, and specific subtopics. The result is usually a bland, generic Wikipedia-style summary.
Conversely, another mistake is "prompt stuffing"—overloading the AI with contradictory or excessive instructions. In Midjourney, adding 50 different adjectives (e.g., "beautiful, stunning, gorgeous, amazing, masterpiece, trending on artstation") dilutes the core subject of your prompt. The AI gets confused about what to prioritize. Stick to impactful, specific descriptors.
Finally, avoid using negative language in basic text prompts unless explicitly supported (like Midjourney's --no parameter). Instead of saying "Don't make the character look sad," say "Make the character look joyful." AI models often struggle with negation and may accidentally focus on the word "sad."
Advanced Techniques for Professional Results
For professionals integrating AI into their daily workflow, basic prompting is not enough. Advanced users leverage techniques like Prompt Chaining, Multi-Prompting, and Parameter Tuning to achieve exact results.
Prompt Chaining (Text): Instead of asking ChatGPT to write a 2,000-word article in one go (which often results in repetitive filler), break the task down. First, ask it to generate an outline. Review and edit the outline. Then, ask it to write the introduction. Then, ask it to write section one based on the outline, and so on. This maintains high quality and coherence throughout long documents.
Multi-Prompting & Weighting (Images): In Midjourney, you can use double colons (::) to separate concepts and assign them numerical weights. For example, if you prompt space ship::2 underwater::1, the AI will blend the concepts but prioritize the spaceship aesthetic twice as much as the underwater environment. This is crucial for balancing complex compositions.
Seed Control: AI generation involves randomness. If you generate an image you like but want to make a slight tweak to the prompt, the AI will usually generate a completely different composition. By finding the "Seed" number of your favorite image and adding --seed [number] to your next prompt, you force the AI to use the same starting noise, allowing for consistent character design and iterative refinement.
